BIOGRAPHY

ERSUN NECATİ KURTULUŞ

is an outdoor enthusiast of Turkish origin, Swedish citizenship and, until recently, of British residency. He has climbed extensively, both Alpine and rock, in the Alps, the Andes, the Himalayas, Borneo, Africa, Norway, Alaska, the United Kingdom and Turkey. He is a qualified Rock Climbing Instructor and Mountain Leader (Summer). In addition to climbing, he has done high altitude trekking in the Alps, the Andes and the Himalaya, caving in the United Kingdom and Turkey, and has biked along the Hadrian’s Wall, the Western Front (World War I) from the Atlantic Coast to Verdun and up to the North Cape in Norway from Bodö. He has given motivational and educational talks about outdoors and mountaineering to students at various schools and universities. He acted as a coach to the University of Kent Mountaineering Club (UKC-MC), Ankara University – Caving Exploration Unit and Social Sciences University of Ankara (ASBU) Climbing Group. He was also an academic adviser to TED University Outdoor Sports Group. He is a member of the Alpine Club, the British Mountaineering Council and the Mountain Training Association, UK. He is the father of two lovely kids, a 7-year old boy and a 3.5-year old girl who live in Norway.

Professionally

Kurtuluş is an Associate Professor in International Relations at the Social Sciences University of Ankara (ASBU) in Ankara, Turkey. Previously, he has held various academic positions at the University of Stockholm, Open University, Imperial College London, University of Kent and TED University in Ankara. He has published extensively in Review of International Studies, The Middle East Journal, Global Society, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Third World Quarterly and Critical Studies on Terrorism. He is also the author of State Sovereignty – Concept, Phenomenon and Ramifications. His research interests include contemporary trends in terrorism and counterterrorism, Lebanese politics, state sovereignty, politics of the Middle East and collapsed states. He has been an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies (BJMES) since 2007.
